How to Host a Vision Board Party: Agenda, Invite & Prompts

To host a vision board party, plan about 3½ hours, and spend most of it cutting and gluing. This page is the plan for the night itself: a timed agenda, a countdown, invitation wording, prompts and a run sheet you can print. I've been making vision boards since I was a teenager, and I've been building VISIYA, a vision board app for iPhone and iPad, since 2022. You don't need a paid workshop or a fancy kit for a good night. Old magazines, scissors, glue and a free printable template are plenty.

What's a good vision board party agenda?

Seven blocks: arrive, a quick intention round, cut out pictures, a break, sort and glue, a sharing round and a wrap-up. That's 3½ hours, plus about 30 minutes to clean up.

0:45–1:30	Cut out pictures: anything that catches your eye, no glue yet	Keep the magazines moving around the table. Call time twice: "15 minutes left," then "5 minutes."
1:30–1:45	Break	Refill drinks. Food stays on a separate table.
1:45–2:45	Sort and glue	Switch to quieter music. Hand a prompt card to anyone who's stuck.
2:45–3:15	Sharing round, about 3 minutes each	Share your board first, in 2 minutes or less.
3:15–3:30	Wrap-up: one small wish for this week, a photo of every board, a check-in date	Text the check-in date to the group chat before anyone leaves.
After	Cleanup, about 30 minutes	Set out wipes and a trash bag for each table.

Times count from your start time. If guests arrive at 7 pm, the intention round starts at 7:30 and the sharing round at 9:45.

Keep the intention round short on purpose. Nobody has to explain their goals to a room. One word is enough. I give every year of my life a motto. One year it was simply "Pink," another year "Radical visibility." A word like that tells you which pictures to reach for.

Cut first, glue later. With no glue on the table, people cut freely. Sorting weeds out a lot of the pile, and the board ends up with fewer, better pictures. Calling time is what keeps a table of eight on a 3½-hour schedule.

How do you plan a vision board party?

Start three weeks out. Here's the countdown, from the invite to the day of.

Three weeks before

• Pick a date. If you like to plan by the moon, the new moon dates are on our vision board party page.
• Invite 4 to 8 friends. More than that rarely fits around one table.

One week before

• Send a reminder with three questions to think about: What's been good for you lately? What do you want to be different a year from now? What word fits your next year?
• Ask everyone to bring two or three old magazines and a pair of scissors. No magazines? Save pictures to a folder on your phone or a Pinterest board and print the favorites.

Two days before

• Print the free This Year I Will board for every guest (PDF).
• Print the run sheet and cut out the prompt cards.

The day of

• Set up a supply table with one pair of scissors per person.
• Put the food on its own table, so nothing greasy lands on the paper.
• Leave the phone basket by the door.

What should a vision board party invitation say?

When, how long, what to bring, and two lines that take the pressure off. Copy one of these:

For the group chat:

Hi friends! I'm hosting a vision board party on [day, date] at [time] at my place. Plan on about 3½ hours. We'll flip through magazines, cut out whatever speaks to us and each make our own board for the year ahead. Please bring two or three old magazines and a pair of scissors. I've got the templates, glue and snacks. You don't need to be crafty, and nobody has to share anything they'd rather keep to themselves. Let me know by [date] if you can make it!

For a printed or digital card:

Vision Board Party at [name]'s

[Day, date], [time], about 3½ hours

Bring: two or three old magazines and scissors

No craft skills needed. Sharing is optional.

How do you run the sharing round?

Give it a format and an exit: 3 minutes each, one picture and one first step. Anyone who doesn't want to share says "pass."

1. You go first. Show your board in 2 minutes or less. Everyone sees how short it can be and follows your lead.
2. One picture, not the whole board. Each guest holds up the picture that matters most to them and says what it means.
3. Then one first step, with a when. "I'm signing up for the pottery class on Monday," not "I want to be more creative."
4. Passing is fine. Say so during the intention round. Whoever passes doesn't explain, and nobody comments.
5. No follow-up questions about money or health. Those don't belong in front of the group. If someone brings them up on their own, let them talk and don't dig.

Why the step and not the big dream? In one study by Peter Gollwitzer and colleagues (2009), students who told others about a goal tied to who they wanted to be, like becoming a good lawyer, then put less effort into it. Being noticed made them feel they were already partway there. Those were small lab experiments, not parties, and later studies haven't all found the same thing.

The better-supported tool is an if-then plan: when X happens, I'll do Y. A meta-analysis by Gollwitzer and Paschal Sheeran (2006) found these plans clearly help people reach their goals. Nobody has tested them on vision boards.

What prompts help when someone is stuck?

Questions people can answer without much thought. Here are ten, two for each area of the This Year I Will board. Set them out as cards for anyone staring at a blank board.

Can you host a virtual vision board party?

Yes. Use the same agenda and skip the break. Email everyone the This Year I Will PDF a week ahead so they can print it and make their boards at home on camera.

• Run the sharing round the same way, with each guest holding their picture up to the camera.
• Call time in the chat so nobody has to talk over anyone.
• Or fill one shared board together in VISIYA (iPhone and iPad only). Each friend needs their own invite code, since each code works only once. Joining is free, but on the free plan the shared board counts as their one board.

What happens after the party?

A board that ends up in a drawer does nothing. So before anyone leaves, agree on two things: one small wish for this week and a check-in in three months.

One small wish this week. Each guest picks something from their board they can do within seven days: buy the book, book the class, send the text.

A check-in in three months. Same group, 30 minutes on a video call: what's checked off, and what did you drop? A meta-analysis by Benjamin Harkin and colleagues (2016, 138 studies) found that keeping track of progress helps people reach goals, more so when they write it down or tell someone. Most of those studies were about health goals like losing weight or quitting smoking, not vision boards.

Don't expect every wish to come true. I take stock every year around my birthday, and about half of mine do. On my board for 34, it was 12 of 22.
